International workplace communications study highlights growing disconnect between US businesses and their staff
BEND, OR – 17 May 2017 –
Four out of five US workers (79%) are more likely to find out important company information from their colleagues than they are from official communication channels. That’s according to the new Generation Now report from Kollective, a leading provider of software-defined enterprise content delivery network solutions.
The Kollective study, carried out with more than 2,000 UK and US office workers, highlights that American employees feel drastically out of the loop when it comes to understanding what is going on inside their own organizations. Yet for many employees, even hearing news from colleagues can be seen as a luxury, with 46% of US employees reporting that their main source of company news is unofficial, external sources such as the media.
Faced with this disconnect, nearly half of US employees (45%) say that they are not satisfied with the communication from their senior management team.
Today’s office workers are demanding a far more direct approach to workplace communication, with 62 percent wanting to receive updates from their CEO face-to-face — either in person or via some form of live video broadcast. As it stands, however, many businesses simply aren’t making the time to communicate with employees in a direct way.
Commenting on these findings, Todd Johnson, President of Kollective, said: “Businesses in America are faced with a serious disconnect between how senior management currently disseminates information and the communications approach that employees have grown accustomed to within their personal lives. Today’s employees are demanding a more open, more personal, and ultimately more direct, line of communication between themselves and their senior management teams.
“With 3.7 million US workers now working from home at least half of the time, Kollective’s report suggests that this communication breakdown is only set to get worse unless businesses change their approach. The introduction of new communication technologies offer the opportunity for organizations to bridge the gap between the workforce and senior management, using enterprise-wide webcasts and livestreamed updates to create stronger connections. While many businesses are still struggling to support and deliver video on a large scale, easy-to-deploy software-based solutions are already helping to overcome this issue, ultimately ensuring that CEOs and business leaders can close the communications gap.”
